When you want to market your small business, the three social media sites you will usually want to target are Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Each of these 3 sites has a different character , however, and if your business is going to reach people better, you need to understand these characters and adjust your marketing strategy in an appropriate way.

The very first thing to understand is the general state of mind of the types of people who actively participate in each of these social media websites:

- Facebook users are generally looking out for a relaxing way to reconnect with their friends and families. Most use Facebook to share personal updates on what they're doing and feeling, but others share links and info that demonstrates that they are smart, fashionable, witty, and well-informed.

- LinkedIn visitors are usually serious, centered, and professional. In most cases, the personal information shared so casually on Facebook would be embarassingly out-of-place on LinkedIn. This is not, for example, the appropriate place for posting family photos, making strong religious or political statements, or swapping jokes.

- Twitter is an enormous, loud cocktail party, where everyone seems to be chatting all at once. The stream of conversation comes fast and furious from all different directions.

So how can you leverage each one of these 3 social media sites to your top advantage?

If your business wants to share news, events, new product commercialization, and promotions with your audience, modify your approach to fit the "personalities" of the varied social media sites and their users. On Facebook, feel free to be more casual, fun, and light-hearted. On LinkedIn, be buttoned-up and to-the-point. And on Twitter, you will need to be sensational, sparkly, and provocative in order to break out in a noisy, cluttered environment.

In each case, take one or two seconds to carefully think through the info you want like to present before you post it. Do not just whip out the first thing that pops into your head. Be especially clear on exactly what you want to get across- - and precisely what you need your target audience to do or say as a result of your post. When you've centered your message, it's time to shift your perspective. What would make this engaging and worthwhile to your audience? What is going to get THEM interested? Why will they care?

When you know precisely what you wish to say and structure it to the mind-set of your target audience, you are now ready to post on Facebook, LinkedIn, and/or Twitter. Be clear. Be compelling. And by respecting the various "personalities" of each social media site, you'll certainly be on the right track to leveraging these tools more successfully. Try it today!
