Businesses and consumers have many options when it comes to shipping packages as priority mail. There are four main companies in the United States that handle the bulk of shipments, they are FedEx, UPS, DHL, and USPS. All four have different standards and prices for this shipping option.

FedEx has a quick delivery option listed as FedEx priority overnight. They will deliver any package under 50 pounds by 10:30 am the following day to most locations in the country. Areas with limited accessibility can expect a delivery by end of the day on the following day. Pickup of packages are available on all days, except Sunday. FedEx's prices depend on weight and location of delivery.

Two of the companies don't list a priority option by name, but both have similar next day delivery options that vary by delivery times. One of those companies is UPS with a delivery option as early as 8:00 am the next day. The other two delivery options vary by time based on locations and required quickness of delivery. Providing three options can make shipping more cost effective if the lasted delivery time is chosen.

DHL also doesn't list the option by name, but offers a choice, similar to UPS, of three next day delivery times. For the earliest delivery times, before noon, customers can only drop packages off at business centers. This will limit this option for many people who aren't in major cities. The third option has pickup available throughout the country and is the most cost effective. All prices are determined using the same factors as UPS.

USPS is the only option that offers a flat rate for priority mail. The flat rate is based upon what size box is used, the weight and location don't add to the cost. Deliveries are usually made within two days, but that is not guaranteed like the other companies. They don't charge extra for Saturday deliveries and pickups are always free. They pride themselves on being the only option when shipping to a mail slot or PO box.

All four companies have exceptions to their shipping guidelines. Prices can increase for added services, such as Saturday delivery. Extra time can also be required when shipping outside of the continental United States. When shipping to remote locations, guaranteed delivery times can be voided. It's beneficial to the customer to always research what exceptions the company policy has.

Priority mail is not a black and white business, almost all costs are dependent upon weight and location. Even flat rate options can vary if services are added on, like delivery confirmations. When shipping a package, it's important to explore all of these options each time to find the best rate for that package.
